Meet The Team - Jo
Over the coming weeks, we'll be introducing the wonderful people behind No.14. The team who keep the shelves stocked, wrap your gifts with care, and make the shop a place you love to visit.
We'll be chatting about what everyone does behind the scenes, the parts of the job they love most (and the bits they could happily do without!), the products they're currently obsessed with, and the independent businesses that inspire them.
Whether you're a familiar face or have only just discovered No.14, we can't wait for you to get to know the people behind the shop.
First up is, of course, the founder of No.14, Jo.
Fifteen years ago, Jo opened the doors to a tiny shop on Woburn Street in Ampthill, with little more than a passion for retail and herself behind the counter. Fast forward to today, and No.14 has grown into a thriving independent shop, a busy online store, and a fantastic team of 11.
We caught up with Jo to find out more about her journey, what she loves most about running No.14, and the products she's got her eye on.
What inspired you to start No.14? Was there a particular moment when you knew you wanted to open your own shop?
I was the child who always wanted a till, a shop counter and pretend post office for Christmas, so I guess that’s when it originally started. I worked in the motor industry for years and switched from selling cars to cards after falling out of love with a hefty commute. I love sending cards and choosing thoughtful gifts, it was destined to be the next step in my retailing career.
What does a typical day look like for you behind the scenes?
Having moved to Norfolk almost 4 years ago, my behind the scenes is remote. I still work pretty much every day, ordering stock, sourcing new products and working on the business, rather than in the business. I have the best team, they’re the ones who should take credit for our 5 star reviews, social media presence, customer service and beautiful displays.
When I’m in the shop at the weekend, I literally don’t stop, whether that’s serving customers, stock checking or working out how we can maximise our displays.
What's your favourite part of owning No.14?
Hearing that somebody received a fantastic gift, knowing that it was purchased from us and being part of the Ampthill community
Every job has its challenges... What's the least glamorous part of running an independent business?
The number of emails I receive every day is relentless, I need to address that.
If you could only take home one thing from the shop today, what would it be and why?
My first answer would be our shop dog, Ebony, but if it has to be stock, it would be one of our Fox Cub & Co candles, I love them!
If you needed a last-minute gift, what would you choose from No.14?
For a female, a candle or diffuser. For a male, a book or a fun novelty item from Kikkerland. For a baby a Jellycat soother and for a child, Needoh or a puzzle.
Which other independent business do you always recommend, and what makes it so special?
One of the best additions to our town is the Lucky Hare Bookshop, it’s not just a bookshop, it’s a community and a meeting place.
What are you most excited about for No.14 over the next few months?
Gift shops love new seasons and so do I. I’m always buzzing to launch our new season products.
